“So, he’s going to be fine?” a woman’s voice asked somewhere above me.

“He will be,” another woman answered as soft hands adjusted something wrapped around my upper arm. “He’ll need quite a bit of rest, fluids, and nutrition. You both will, but you’ll be fine.”

“Thank you, Doctor.” The first voice sounded like the weight of the world had been lifted from her shoulders.

Something sharp and cold stabbed me in the crook of my elbow. My eyes flew open with a roar.

“Ow, that fuckin’ hurt,” I yelled at the woman in the white coat who held a needle dripping with my blood.

“Khan, hey, it’s okay.” Adelyn came into view as she pressed a hand to my chest. “She just needed a blood sample so she could run a few more tests and clear you to leave.”

“What about you? Have you been cleared?”

She nodded with a reassuring smile. A knot loosened in my chest.

“Fine, just make it quick,” I said, extending my arm for the doctor again. “Would it hurt ya to be a little more gentle, though?”

The doctor said nothing, but she kept her face straight, if not a little apprehensive, as she approached with a new needle. I winced, but she was more gentle this time, and she rushed off when she had what she needed.

When the door closed behind her, I turned my attention back to Adelyn. I studied her up and down.

She wore clean clothes and looked like she recently showered. She had bags under her eyes, and a bruise blossomed over her collarbone where the seatbelt had kept her from flying out the window.

Overall, she didn’t look the worse for wear.

“You’re okay,” I said, more statement than question.

“I am,” she said, glancing down at her hand that still rested on my chest. “And you are too.”

I nodded offhandedly, still searching her for some invisible injury.

“I’m sorry,” I said finally.

“For what?” she asked, cocking her head to one side.

“The accident,” I said. “I’m sure there was somethin’ I coulda done to kept ya from gettin’ hurt and endin’ up back in a hospital.”

She lifted her other hand to cup my cheek.

“Khan, it wasn’t your fault. Sometimes these things just happen, and you handled things a lot better than most people would have.” Her gaze softened, and her eyes roamed my face. They kept coming back to my lips. “We’re both alive and well, with a couple of bruises and scratches,” she said. “It could have been so much worse than it was.”

I nodded, a part of me believing her. But I knew I wasn’t entirely blameless in this. She wouldn’t have even been in that car if it weren’t for me.

“Hey,” she said softly, leaning in closer. “I can see all the wheels turning in your head, making up ways I could blame you for all of this. Stop it. You’re my hero. You could have saved yourself and then me, but you chose to save me first and foremost.”

I had no idea how to answer that, so instead, I pushed myself up, trying to close the distance between the two of us.
